| Freestanding Lace Chess |
The origin of chess is still quite a controversial subject (some saying that it originated in China, others in India, for example). The first games that approach what we now consider to be Chess appeared around the 6th century AD. Earlier than that, board games in Russia, China, India, and Asia did not resemble modern chess. The first precursor of modern chess was probably a four-player game named "chaturanga" which takes its name from a battle formation mentioned in the Indian epic "Mahabharata." In this game, the pieces had different powers (like chess and unlike checkers and go) and victory or defeat was based on one piece, the King. This game was popular in India in the 7th century and was played with dice on a 64-square board. |
