The 6*10 clutch purse is my favoriute. Here I used white thread for the freestanding lace flap as well as the brocade-like patterns. Lots of space for a Valentine evening out.

HI Annemarie, here is a picture of the purse I made using your designs.  I just love it.  Some of the girls around here want them to match their prom dresses. Keep up the good work! Gail gailann@fedteldirect.net

Tutorial for

LACE CLUTCH PURSES

(FREESTANDING LACE AND APPLIQUE COMBINATION)

1

01.jpg

1. For this project you need:

  • Water-soluble stabilizer
  • Adhesive spray
  • Embroidery thread of choice (always use the same thread top and bottom)
  • Batting approx. 3-4mm or 0.12’’ thick
  • Fabric of choice
  • Lining (you are welcome to use the same fabric for lining purposes as well)

 Font and Back panels

2

02.jpg

  • Hoop at least 2 x layers water-soluble stabilizer (perpendicular)
  • Stitch first step = shows “appliqué position”
  • Note that a “default color” is used for this step

3

03.jpg

  • Place batting and fabric to cover the “appliqué position”
  • Stitch next step = material stitched to water-soluble stabilizer
  • Note that a “default color” is used for this step

4

04.jpg

  • This is how it should look at this stage

5

05.jpg

  • Stitch next step with the color to match your fabric
  • Follow your thread chart to complete the design

Now for lining your design:

  • Once the design is complete, carefully remove your
  • hoop without interfering with the hooped fabric.
  • Spray adhesive spray to the back and cover the area with lining fabric or same fabric as we did

606.jpg

  • Replace hoop in your embroidery machine and stitch next step
  • This outline will secure the fabric/lining to the back
  • Now you can remove your hoop again and cut away the excess fabric from the front and from the back
  • Replace hoop in your embroidery machine and your last step = satin outline will cover the edges neatly
  • Remove design from hoop and cut away excess water-soluble stabilizer
  • Keep the front and back panels ready to assemble

 Assembling the gussets

7

07.jpg

  • You should have 3 panels for completing the gusset section of which 1 x base gusset panel and 2 x side gusset panels
  • On your sewing machine zigzag the side panels to the base panels

Assembling the gusset strip to the front panel

8

08.jpg

  • First mark the center of the front-bottom panel and the centre of the complete gusset strip

9

09.jpg

  • Start sewing from this markings

10

10.jpg

  • Using a zigzag stitch SL=1.5 SW=4 stitch the gusset strip to the one half of the front panel

11

11.jpg

  • Again starting from the center sew the other half

12

12.jpg

  • Your front panel with the gusset strip attached should look like this now

13

13.jpg

  • The gusset tip can now be folded to the inside

14

14.jpg

  • Make sure the top end is straight

15

15.jpg

  • Mentioned here is 2 options for securing the gusset tip to the inside

16

16.jpg

1. Stick with a fabric glue or

2. insert “metal rings” which will look lovely when attaching a strap

 Inserting metal rings

17

17.jpg

  • You will need a fabric marker, “metal rings” and consider yourself fortunate if you can find the correct tools to do this easy and quick.
  • Here in Namibia we often have to come up with bright ideas to get the job done…LOL

18

18.jpg

  • Make the correct size hole for the size “metal ring”  you would like to insert

19

19.jpg

  • Insert your “metal ring”  through this hole

20

20.jpg

  • And this is where the fun starts…
  • I used a Phillips screwdriver and hammer
  • Insert your screwdriver on the inside of the “metal ring”  and tap once with the hammer

21

21.jpg

  • Lift and turn the screwdriver only a quarter of a turn, tap again
  • Now you can tap twice directly on the “metal ring” for the sharp edges to open tightly over the fabric
  • This worked wonderfully!!!

22

22.jpg

  • This is what your front panel will look like so far

Completing the Flap panel (click on the pics for enlarged view)

23

a.jpg

  • Hoop 2-3 layers water-soluble stabilizer
  • Stitch the first step, which will be an outline with arrow markings
  • (I use 2 layers, hooped perpendicular to each other)

24

b.jpg

  • You will see the outline where your fabric will be placed.
  • The arrows indicate the direction your fabric should be placed.

25

  • Referring to your cutting list, fold the correct size fabric in half
  • Fold a seam to the inside on both sides, leaving the top section open

26

c.jpg

  • Place your folded fabric  (top open section) totally over the outline.
  • Note that your outline is not visible at all.

27

d.jpg

  • Stitch the next step which will secure the fabric to the hooped water-soluble stabilizer.
  • You will see an outline similar to the one you stitched in "Step b" above.
  • The fabric covered this outlined area completely

28

e.jpg

  • Once the outline has been stitched, your fabric is now secured to the water-soluble stabilizer.
  • Carefully cut away your excess fabric as indicated on the picture.

g

g.jpg

29

h.jpg

  • Now the basis for the freestanding lace flap is layer
  • Complete the flpa by following the clor chart in your text file for every individual purse flap (remember we have a selection of 20+ purses based on this tutorial).

30

i.jpg

  • The steps to follow are specific for the Edwardian Clutch purse.

31

j.jpg

  • Color change: Now start stitching your freestanding lace flap.

32

k.jpg

  • Color change: Stitch out your next layer.

33

l.jpg

  • Color change: Stitch out your final layer.

34

m.jpg

  • Your freestanding lace flap is now finished.
  • Remove design from hoop and cut away excess water-soluble stabilizer

35

28.jpg

  • If you have not stitched the side seams, you can do so now with a straight stitch on your sewing machine
  • Wash in luke-warm water
  • I prefer to soak my freestanding lace in fabric softener for that soft gentle touch
  • Let it dry

36

29.jpg

  • Measure first!
  • Measure with your front panel/gusset attached the distance of the gusset from the flap’s freestanding lace section

37

30.jpg

  • Place your back panel on this line as this is where the back panel needs to be stitched to the flap panel
  • With a straight stitch, stitch the flap panel to the rear panel

38

31.jpg

  • Now you can mark the centre bottom of the front panel with added gussets as well as the center of the rear panel bottom
  • Starting at this point sew the rear panel to the gusset-front-panel-section
  • Then sew the other half

39

32.jpg

  • Add a strap, beaded string and a pearl as embellishments if you desire

40

33.jpg

And your Freestanding Lace – Appliqué combination Purse from “A Stitch A Half” is complete and ready to use
