"Quilt like Crazy" #2

Price $15

Although this type of quilting is called "Crazy Quilting" you do not have to be crazy to make this kind of quilt. "Crazy quilting" started out when folks used any bits of fabric, sew them together and then make quilts or even clothing from it. This project is a way to create that same effect but you can make your crazy quilt in the hoop.

(See photo tutorial at bottom of page. It is just so easy to make.)

In this collection you get 3 different blocks.

Just 3 examples of how you can use your blocks in different combinations to create your crazy quilt.

Here you can see the different pieces of fabric I used to make my pillow covers.

(I decided to make pillow covers but these blocks are also perfect for quilting)

PHOTO TUTORIAL: QUILT LIKE CRAZY

02.jpg

Step 1.

 What you need:

  • Hoop normal "stitch and tear" stabilizer
  • Adhesive spray
  • 4 small pieces of fabric (4"*4")
  • carbon paper or tailors tracing paper
  • Tracing wheel
  • Embroidery scissors
  • Rotary cutter and cutting mat

01.jpg

Step 2.

  •  Stitch the first default color = a running stitch

03.jpg

Step 3.

  •  Place 4 x pieces of fabric on top of each other.
  • Place trasing/carbon paper on top of fabric
  • Place hoop with running stitch on top of the carbon/trasing paper

04.jpg

Step 4.

  •  Running all over the lines of the running stitch
  • Thus transferring the image in the hoop to your fabric

05.jpg

Step 5.

  •  The indicated "dots" would probably be hard to see on this photo, but make sure you can see the lines clearly.

06.jpg

Step 6.

  • Using your rotary cutter, cut out all the pieces indicated in the block
  • Cut as precise as possible

07.jpg

Step 7.

  •  You now have matching fabric pieces to the sections in your hoop

Step 8.

08.jpg

  • Divide your 4 x layers of fabric blocks

 Step 9.

09.jpg

  • Start interchanging the sections of each block.
  • You should have 4 x unique blocks

 Step 10.

10.jpg

  • This is what your first 4 x crazy quilt blocks will look

11.jpg

Step 11.

  •  Spray adhesive spray in the hoop and keep the first block of fabric pieces ready

12.jpg

Step 12.

  • Stick all the pieces in their matching areas
  • Make sure the fabric pieces cover the running stitch it is suppose to be in

13.jpg

Step 13.

  •  This is how it should look at this stage
  • The hard part is over and you can now sit back and relax :-)

14.jpg

Step 14.

  • Replace the hoop in your embroidery machine
  • Slip another piece of stabilizer underneath your hoop before stitching start. This will ensure your embroidery to stay in place.
  • The next stitch will be a zigzag stitch which will secure all the edges of the different pieces of fabric

15.jpg

Step 15.

  • The final stitch will be a satin stitch which will cover these zigzag stitching
  • Remember to choose a color to compliment all 4 fabric sections in your hoop

16.jpg

Step 16.

  • Finally remove your design from the hoop and tear away the stabilizer

17.jpg

Step 17.

  • Cut away any whiskers that might still be visible

18.jpg

Step 18.

  • Turn design over and tear away stabilizer from the back

19.jpg

Step 19.

  • Your first crazy block is finished !
  • As you already have 3 blocks left to stitch you can now follow from steps 11.

This is great fun and I hope that you will enjoy making quilts, crazy pillows etc as much as I did...
