Font and Back panels

 2.

  • Hoop at least 2 x layers water-soluble stabilizer (perpendicular)
  • Stitch first step = shows “appliqué position”
  • Note that a “default color” is used for this step

  3.

  • Place batting and fabric to cover the “appliqué position”
  • Stitch next step = material stitched to water-soluble stabilizer
  • Note that a “default color” is used for this step

 4.

  • This is how it should look at this stage

 5.

  • Stitch next step with the color to match your fabric
  • Follow your thread chart to complete the design

Now for lining your design:

  • Once the design is complete, carefully remove your hoop without interfering with the hooped fabric.
  • Spray adhesive spray to the back and cover the area with lining fabric or same fabric as we did

 6.

  • Replace hoop in your embroidery machine and stitch next step
  • This outline will secure the fabric/lining to the back
  • Now you can remove your hoop again and cut away the excess fabric from the front and from the back
  • Replace hoop in your embroidery machine and your last step = satin outline will cover the edges neatly
  • Remove design from hoop and cut away excess water-soluble stabilizer
  • Keep the front and back panels ready to assemble

Assembling the gussets

 7.

  • You should have 3 panels for completing the gusset section of which 1 x base gusset panel and 2 x side gusset panels
  • On your sewing machine zigzag the side panels to the base panels

Assembling the gusset strip to the front panel

 8.

  • First mark the center of the front-bottom panel and the centre of the complete gusset strip

 9.

  • Start sewing from this markings

 10.

  • Using a zigzag stitch SL=1.5 SW=4 stitch the gusset strip to the one half of the front panel

 11.

  • Again starting from the center sew the other half

 12.

  • Your front panel with the gusset strip attached should look like this now

 13.

  • The gusset tip can now be folded to the insid

 14.

  • Make sure the top end is straight

 15.

  • Mentioned here is 2 options for securing the gusset tip to the inside

 16.

1. Stick with a fabric glue or

2. insert “metal rings” which will look lovely when attaching a strap

Inserting metal rings

 17.

  • You will need a fabric marker, “metal rings” and consider yourself fortunate if you can find the correct tools to do this easy and quick.
  • Here in Namibia we often have to come up with bright
  • ideas to get the job done…LOL

 18.

  • Make the correct size hole for the size “metal ring”  you would like to insert

 19.

  • Insert your “metal ring”  through this hole

 20.

  • And this is where the fun starts…
  • I used a Phillips screwdriver and hammer
  • Insert your screwdriver on the inside of the “metal ring”  and tap once with the hammer

  21.

  • Lift and turn the screwdriver only a quarter of a turn, tap again
  • Now you can tap twice directly on the “metal ring” for the sharp edges to open tightly over the fabric
  • This worked wonderfully!!!

  22.

  • This is what your front panel will look like so fa

Completing the Flap panel

 23.

  • Hoop 2-3 layers water-soluble stabilizer
  • Stitch the first step, which will be an outline with arrow marking

 24.

Referring to your cutting list (shown above), you folded the correct size fabric in half

Place fold on this arrow marked strip and make exact markings for the length of this indicated strip

  25

  • Fold both sides towards the inside
  • You are welcome to secure the sides now with a straight stitch or you can sew the sides together once all embroidery is done

 26.

  • Place this fabric on the arrow markings
  • The fold aligns with the straight stitch as indicated by the arrows

 27.

  • Stitch the next step which will secure the fabric to the hooped water-soluble stabilizer on the arrow marked area
  • Complete the rest of the design by following your thread chart mentioned in your PDF file included in your zip file.
  • This is what your design will look like at this stage

 28.

  • Remove design from hoop and cut away excess water-soluble stabilizer
  • Wash in luke-warm water
  • I prefer to soak my freestanding lace in fabric softener for that soft gentle touch
  • Let it dry
  • If you have not stitched the side seams, you can do so now with a straight stitch on your sewing machine

 29.

  • Measure first!
  • Measure with your front panel/gusset attached the distance of the gusset from the flap’s freestanding lace section

 30.

  • Place your back panel on this line as this is where the back panel needs to be stitched to the flap panel
  • With a straight stitch, stitch the flap panel to the rear panel

 31.

  • Now you can mark the centre bottom of the front panel with added gussets as well as the center of the rear panel bottom
  • Starting at this point sew the rear panel to the gusset-front-panel-section
  • Then sew the other hal

 32.

Add a strap, beaded string and a pearl as embellishments if you desire

 33.

And your Freestanding Lace – Appliqué combination Purse from “A Stitch A Half” is complete and ready to use
