Windhoek by Night

At the end of each year, it is custom for many cities to "dress up" with festive lights and all different ways to brighten up the city. In Windhoek, our home in Namibia, it is the same. Although we live in Windhoek, the Capital of Namibia, the total population of the city is only about 200 000. Rather small in comparison with other western cities.

But this place is as beautiful as any other city we know. A way of job creation means the city streets are swept each night. No, not with machines and heavy equipment but people do it with brooms. A huge task but it gives everybody a sense of pride when walking in our clean streets.

Allow us to take you on a trip to the center of our beautiful city to show you our festive lights.

In the main street (Independance Avenue) this beautiful message greats all tourists.

This photo was taken at about 7:30pm with lots of tourists and local gathering in one of the parks to enjoy the lights and festive atmosphere.

The "historical" and modern architecture is a wonderful mix in the main street to reflect the different cultural influences that shaped the city. This building dates back to 1870 and is home to German souvenir shops and restaurants.

These little lights cascade in all the bright festive colors to create a wonderful festive atmosphere. Taken with a delay action all the colors are present to show you the total effect.

This photo was taken at a fish pond in the middle of a park in town. The lights show a fish jumping out of the pond, then in mid-air, and then entering the water again. I managed to get the reflection in the water as well.

An office block contributes to the beauty of the city at night.

Little icicles that flicker and twirl when the night time temperature is still 30 degrees Celcius at about 9pm. (86 degrees fahrenheit)

And finally more historical buildings decorated with the little bright lights.
